Week 19 – Change our minds; Change our behavior; Charge our outcome.

REPOSTED from 2014 class – Carolynn Sokil

Watching Amy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you are on TED during this week’s exercise was eye opening. It reminded me to observe. It spurred me to do something for myself (the pose). It allowed me to change my outcome.

Why you ask?  Y you ask?  Hmmm interesting letter – the 25th one in the alphabet.

Excerpt from the transcript for the above video “…what are nonverbal expressions of power and dominance?”

“So in the animal kingdom, they are about expanding. So you make yourself big, you stretch out, you take up space, you’re basically opening up. It’s about opening up…..This expression, which is known as pride, Jessica Tracy has studied.”

article-2183989-14639137000005DC-128_634x393She shows that people who are born with sight and people who are congenitally blind do this when they win at a physical competition. So when they cross the finish line and they’ve won, it doesn’t matter if they’ve never seen anyone do it. They do this. So the arms up in the V, the chin is slightly lifted.”

“What do we do when we feel powerless? We do exactly the opposite. We close up. We wrap ourselves up. We make ourselves small.”

“…our bodies change our minds and our minds can change our behavior, and our behavior can change our outcome…”

After everything we have learned during these past 18 weeks, we continue to be challenged – to open our minds – to realize again how what we put in (to our minds, our bodies, our thoughts) truly affects what comes out (of our minds, our bodies, our thoughts).

Guardian 2.12.1420140213_154015My son came home from school on Thursday. He immediately informed me during gym they had a speed walking race and he won the gold medal.  He was ecstatic.  He started talking about being in the Olympics.  Is this where it starts?  A seed planted in a young man’s mind – belief both mentally and physically – that he can accomplish great feats?  All I know is that I will continue to encourage him to be all that he can imagine himself to be – guiding him through life’s interesting and sometimes challenging situations (opportunities in disguise) with all that we have learned.

Try it.  You’ll like it. It may become addictive! That’s a good thing…really…a very good thing indeed!

Many blessings and thanks goes out to my ‘teach our kids’ (aka T.O.K.) mastermind alliance group. You are helping me to help others.  I am grateful to have you in my and my family’s life.

Thank you for dropping by this week.
Hands up baby! Hands up!

Have you heard of Sir Ken Robinson? There are many videos of him speaking about education and creativity…. I discovered them while searching for another video months back for a blog I was writing.. I never found the one I was searching for…but his are wonderful! If you google Changing Education Paradigms you’ll find it… The Royal Society for the Arts has a whole host of interesting videos…they are all written out on a white board while being narrated… If you aren’t familiar with them, I think you will love them!! I would love to hear your reaction to them… the Changing Education Paradigms is just about 12 minutes long…

All fired up!!! Wow is all I can say too! You know how hard it is to type with my hands raised to the sky? Well it is easier after I… just got done with my two minutes!! I just get rushes of energy flowing through my body when I do it… sometimes just thinking about standing in my big posture! Thanks… I hope I’ll be able to sleep now… Well done.

    Carolynn,

Creator and author of a comic strip with information that folks can really use! Very impressive! This is an exercise that I have not done as of yet, all tho I did it with the webinar last week, but will make this a part of my daily warm up routine.
